How do I reset a BIOS password?

This is one of the most common questions. One of my friends had taken a pc from the vendor and it was bios password protected. So he wanted some solution .So here are some tips on how to reset the bios password.

Some of the most common bios include AMI, Award, IBM and Phoenix. Some BIOS's allow you to require a password be entered before the system will boot. Some BIOS's allow you to require a password to be entered before the BIOS setup may be accessed.

Best Solution : The BIOS password is stored in CMOS memory that is maintained while the PC is powered off by a small battery, which is attached to the motherboard. Just REMOVE that CMOS battery for 30 seconds and put it back. Everything is reset. You are done.

If you don't wanna meddle with the motherboard and battery here are some of the common passwords used for bios password.

Using a Backdoor BIOS Password:

Here there's a list of common backdoors and default passwords used by manofacturers.
It depends on the BIOS model and if you're lucky will work for you.

For Award BIOS:

AWARD_SW , j262,HLT,SER,SKY_FOX
BIOSTAR,ALFAROME,Lkwpeter
j256,AWARD?SW,LKWPETER
syxz,ALLy,589589,589721,awkward
CONCAT,d8on,CONDO,j64,szyx

For AMI BIOS:

AMI ,BIOS,PASSWORD,HEWITT RAND
AMI?SW,AMI_SW,LKWPETER,A.M.I.
CONDO

For Phoenix BIOS:

phoenix

Using Software: CmosPwd will recover the BIOS password.

Happy bios hacking !

Hackers Promise Month of MySpace Bugs

They won't divulge their real names, they call their project a "whiny, attention-seeking ploy," and they appear to take their fashion cues from Beastie Boys music videos.

But two hackers going by the names of Mondo Armando and Müstaschio promise to begin disclosing security vulnerabilities in MySpace, News Corp.'s popular social networking site, every day next month.

"The purpose of the exercise is not so much to expose MySpace as a hive of spam and villainy (since everyone knows that already), but to highlight the monoculture-style danger of extremely popular websites," wrote Mondo Armando in an e-mail interview.

"We could have just as easily gone after Google or Yahoo or MSN or IDG or whatever. MySpace is just more fun, and is becoming notoriously [obnoxious] about responding to security issues," he said.

These "Month of Bugs" projects have become a way for hackers to bring attention to both themselves and to security problems in certain types of products. Well-known hacker HD Moore kicked off the craze last year when he published one browser bug per day for the month of July. His effort was followed by a "Month of kernel bugs," a "Month of Apple Bugs," and a "Month of PHP Bugs."

The MySpace hackers launched their project late Thursday expressing simultaneous enthusiasm and disdain for the task ahead. "If it ends up being just as lame as the Month of Apple Bugs, then we haven't really missed the mark. If it's funnier, then great," they wrote on their project's blog. "If it kills this Month of Whatever fad, then hurray for everyone, it's over."

They intend to primarily publish cross site scripting bugs, which can allow an attacker to execute malicious script within a victim's browser, but they may also publish bugs that affect browsers or technologies like Flash or QuickTime.

Free Windows Vista- Run it Legally Without Activation for a Year or more

Microsoft always says it opposes "software pirates" who sell thousands of unauthorizedfree_windows_vista.jpg copies of Windows.

A security expert says Windows Vista can be run for at least a year without being activated, but Microsoft calls the process an antipiracy 'hack'.

Windows Vista can be run for at least a year without being activated, a serious end run around one of Microsoft's key antipiracy measures, Windows expert Brian Livingston said Thursday.

Livingston, who publishes the Windows Secret newsletter, said that a single change to Vista's registry lets users put off the operating system's product activation requirement an additional eight times beyond the three disclosed last month. With more research, said Livingston, it may even be possible to find a way to postpone activation indefinitely.

"The [activation] demands that Vista puts on corporate buyers is much more than on XP," said Livingston. "Vista developers have [apparently] programmed in back doors to get around time restrictions for Vista activation."

Brian Livingston describes the Registry key that's involved and the steps :

Howto Turn Off Automatic Update Dialog Box in Windows XP

Windows XP's automatic update facility is really fantastic. You don't need to update manually, but its annoying too…it requires a reboot at the time when you're working on the computer… Then you get this lovely dialog:

windows-automatic-update-restart-later.png

This is the most Naggiest Dialog Box ever seen. It can't be closed. Not like KBC(where you get 4 choices) Here You get only two choices– Restart Now, or Restart Later. If you click Restart Later, it pops up again ten minutes later.

I want automatic updates, but I also want to restart my computer when I feel like it. Is there any way to turn off this amazing-annoying dialog box ?

What is wuauserv Service ?

Enables the download and installation of Windows updates. If this service is disabled, this computer will not be able to use the Automatic Updates feature or the Windows Update Web site.

Two Solutions for this disabling this annoying dialog box :

Do Your Bulbs Keep Blowing?

Problem :  Do Your Bulbs Keep Blowing? ….If so, it may not mean you have a rewiringbulb_blow.jpg problem. Before you call out the electrician, run through these checks.

Check These :

- Have you chosen the correct bulb for the lamp? Overheating, caused if a bulb is forced into an enclosed space, can make it blow.

- Where is your blowing bulb located? Vibration near a bulb from washing machines, children playing or even walking up stairs will often snuff out a light source.

Solution :
The best way to save on power and reduce your bulb-changing frequency is to install CFLs. They are very energy-efficient and you now get yellowish ones that light up just like bulbs.

Use Free Google Image Ripper to fetch photos faster

free_google_image_ripper.jpg

Everybody searches for images in websites by visiting the particular site's gallery.i.e You need to visit their site to get pictures which you want. With Google Image Search you get the required photos but you get the thumbnails and you need to click on the thumbnails to get the actual picture. So here is a small tool to bypasses the thumbnail portion of a Google Images search and takes you straight to the results.

Here's an Image ripper which allows you to get straight to the results rather than searching for images with thumnails and then clicking the thumbnail to get the actual image you require. It search is not elegant as the thumbnail preview but it certainly saves yourtime. You can actually choose the size of the display of the images - icon, small, large, medium, xlarge, xxlarge.  enjoy..

Find images; no more thumbnails, straight to the good stuff

How To Evade Turkey’s YouTube Block

A 27B source inside Turkey reports that some proxies work for routing around the country's blockturkeybanpage_youtube.jpg on YouTube, which was instituted at the direction of a court after it found that a Greek video hosted on the site violated a law against ridiculing the country and its leaders.

Things that seem to work now:

- Using Firefox, instead of IE or Safari

- YouTube videos embedded in a web page or blog work fine

- A proxy, specifically http://youtubeproxy.org/ works well. Just visit that page and then find the video you want to watch.

Others proxies to try include:

My favourite:

For all such blocks is type in the website's ip and you will get through !

- Instead of typing YouTube.com into a browser window, type 208.65.153.253, to evade the DNS server.

This works for all sites which are blocked..

You want to know the ip of any website : Just ping it using command prompt.

Just type : ping <website name.com>

Ex : ping www.youtube.com     to know its Ip address.
