QuickSilverScreen.com Accused of Copyright Violations

My friend had sent me this site just 2 weeks before but this was disappointing.

QuickSilverScreen had been accused of Copyright Violations and closed down. This is their message on their site.

This morning we were falsely accused of hosting copyrighted content by the Malaysian government, in result our host (located in Malaysia) asked us to shutdown the QSS main site server.

We still have full control over all our servers and are working with our host & the malaysian government to find a solution for this stupid mistake.

We expect to be up and running within a few hours/days

How to Enable Orkut Applications

Since many weeks I saw my friend Niru playing IPL(Cric Xchange) app on Orkut using his wife's id as Orkut Apps wasn't enabled for his id. I was wondering why Orkut hasn't enabled this new feature for everybody on Orkut, normally they choose random users and enable new features only to them. But this time, there was a pattern, only people in India had got this feature and very few people outside India, as far as I have observed. As per the usage, Orkut must have enabled this new feature to people in India and maybe Brazil too, as these are the two countries where there are highest users of Orkut.

This trick is for all those Indians who haven't got that feature..(not really a trick..just a…)

How to enable Orkut Applications for your profile?

1. Login to Orkut using your account

2. Edit your profile, change the country to India.

3. You will see a block on the left side below the profile photo called "Apps"

4. Click on Add and you will see a directory of the 'Applications'

5. Add Applications & njoy !

Here are some screenshots:

Register.com’s New Look

While browsing today, I saw that Register.com site is trying out its new look.  Looks like they have tried out embossing styled buttons andregisterlogo.gif images. The use of colors is really nice, the combination of greyish black and green buttons and images makes the site look lively.

People who haven't seen their old site, I have a screenshot of that old site too. It looks so dull and so common. Besides, they have still not changed their site theme, maybe they are experiementing..

But the new look rocks !

Way to go Register.com !

MySpace, Second Life, and Twitter Are Doomed- says PC Magazine

These overhyped social networks will soon crumble under the weight of overhypedsocial_networking.jpg expectations.

Dont get too much attached to these social networking sites. PC Magazine says all these sites will be gone by this decade. MySpace could be the first to collapse. Oh !! So why does they say this ..lets see some of the reasons.

- All share a common thread: overreaching ambition and impossible expectations. They live, to an extent, inside the second Internet bubble.

- Myspace : It's huge, ugly, unmonitored, unrestrained, and pointless. It all looks like garbage. Seriously, have you ever looked at a MySpace page? The frames are ugly, the backgrounds even uglier, and the overall look is horrible..

- More and more predators are using these sites to prey on underage teens.

- Second Life : Reality is, are these virtual company stores building any additional brand recognition simply by being there. The Companies' virtual stores sit empty.

So everybody feel the reality - enough of virtual space and money ..

- Twitter : Twitter is popular now because the Web cognoscenti are using it. This bunch of eggheads prides itself on irony and witticism. They treat the site like some sort of ongoing haiku contest.

We agree to the reasons given for saying that these sites will be doomed by this decade, but there are few of them who have maintained and have an organized way of people interaction. We love Google's Orkut. This was neat before and now too..  So as far as Orkut is concerned, it will be the next best thing which will happen in this decade. People cherish their experiences about Orkut- We meet old friends, forgotten friends…so its the ultimate platform for people interaction.

Don’t activate your copy of Windows Now-Read this first

Scammers all over are taking advantage of the knowledge of common people using Windows. They have adopted nice engineering tricks to trick ppl …

According to the Symantec Security Response Weblog:

Recently we came across an interesting Trojan sample, detected by Symantec as Trojan.Kardphisher. The Trojan is not very technical - it's really just another classic social-engineering attack. What makes it interesting is that the author has obviously taken great pains to make it appear legitimate.

Here’s the scam. The Trojan installs itself onto a PC and presents the user with the following message:

“Your copy of Windows has been activated by another user.
To help reduce software piracy, please re-activate your copy of Windows now.
WE will ask for your billing details, but your credit card will NOT be charged.
You must activate Windows before you can continue to use it.
Microsoft is committed to your Privacy. For more information, www.microsoft.com/piracy.
Do you want to activate Windows now?”

Open Source Hardware Makes its Debut in “Robot Internet Mashup”

Carnegie Mellon University researchers have developed a new series of robots that areqwerkbot3.jpg simple enough for almost anyone to build with off-the-shelf parts, but are sophisticated machines that wirelessly connect to the Internet.

Illah Nourbakhsh is a professor of robotics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, which has one of the world's most prestigious robotics programs, and his research is funded by the likes of Google, Intel and Microsoft. But in the end, he says, he does it for the kids.

Qwerkbot, a three-wheeled robot that can send images over the Internet, is one of several robots that can be built with the Telepresence Robot Kit (TeRK), a combination of a robot controller, commonly available parts and assembly instructions (recipes) developed by the CREATE Lab in Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute. "[TeRK] is not only open from a software perspective, but also from a hardware perspective," Legrand says. "That's something this industry has never seen."

Something Wrong with AOL ??

aol_yahoo_homepage.jpg

AOL has launched a new beta homepage and its design looks like a perfect replica of the Yahoo! homepage- a year old page. With AOL launching its services at different places , this should not be their strategy !! No creativity ??? something wrong with their marketing strategy ?
