Samsung is claiming the fastest SSD data transfer rates to date.CNET site ZDNet Korea reports that Samsung announced the development of a 2.5-inch, 256GB solid state drive (SSD) at the fifth annual Samsung Mobile Solution Forum in Taipei, Taiwan.

Normal notebook PCs come with solid state drives with capacity of 64GB.This drive has a sequential read speed of 200 megabytes per second and sequential write speed of 160MBps.

Special feature of these SSD is they don't have any mechanical moving parts which separates them from other drives which have mechanical failures and delays.

But there was no mention of price anywhere mentioned !

QuickSilverScreen.com Accused of Copyright Violations

My friend had sent me this site just 2 weeks before but this was disappointing.

QuickSilverScreen had been accused of Copyright Violations and closed down. This is their message on their site.

This morning we were falsely accused of hosting copyrighted content by the Malaysian government, in result our host (located in Malaysia) asked us to shutdown the QSS main site server.

We still have full control over all our servers and are working with our host & the malaysian government to find a solution for this stupid mistake.

We expect to be up and running within a few hours/days

Join Hands in Slowing Global Warming-Google takes the leads

Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google is  exploring innovative technologies that promises toclimate_servers.jpg reduce the collective impact on the environment. This type of contribution to the society is what is needed rather just delivering products and softwares.

Google and Intel recently announced they have launched a program to help save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by offering energy-efficient PCs and servers.  The "Climate Savers Computing Initiative" will help create new guidelines and efficiency goals for computers that control power consumption.  The coalition also hopes to save up to $5.5 billion in energy costs per year.

"Let's create a more efficient IT industry by driving up the efficiency of computers," said Pat Gelsinger, Intel Digital Enterprise Group vice president.

"Today, the average desktop PC wastes nearly half of its power, and the average server wastes one-third of its power," said Urs Holzle, Google vice president of operations.

Dell, IBM, Lenovo Group, the U.S. Environment Protection Agency and at least 25 other companies, organizations and universities are participants in the coalition.  Each company and university will promote the program in different manners — for example, Google will send users to participating company web sites.  An additional 15 or so companies — including Sun Microsystems, Yahoo and the World Wildlife Fund — openly support the Climate Savers Computing Initiative.

According to a study released by the group, carbon dioxide emissions could be limited by as much as 54 tons per year — the equivalent of 11 million cars.  To limit that level of carbon dioxide emissions, however, PC power supplies need 90% efficiency.  The group also hopes to raise energy efficiency by 50% within three years.

Britney performs at California nightclub

Britney Spears performed for the first time in more than three years on Tuesday, making a brief,britney_spears_night_club.jpg unadvertised appearance at a San Diego nightclub, local media reported.

The gig, which reportedly lasted between 15 and 20 minutes, was not exactly a surprise. Rumors had run rampant in the past few days that three scheduled southern California shows featuring an unknown band called The M+M's were a cover for the troubled pop princess.

A television news report said $35 tickets for Tuesday's show at the 1,000-capacity House of Blues changed hands for as much as $500. The M+M's are also scheduled to play at House of Blues outlets on Wednesday near Disneyland and on Thursday on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. [ reuters ]

Scientists find most Earth-like planet yet

European astronomers have spotted what they say is the most Earth-like planet yet outside our solar system, with balmy temperatures that could support water and, potentially, life. They have not directly seen the planet, orbiting a red dwarf star called Gliese 581.

"This one is the first one that is at the same time probably rocky, with water, and in a zone close to the star where the water could exist in liquid form," said Stephane Udry of the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland, who led the study.

About the Planet :

"We have estimated that the mean temperature of this super-Earth lies between 0 and 40earth_like_planet.jpg degrees Celsius (32 to 104 degrees F), and water would thus be liquid."

Most of the 200 or so planets that have been spotted outside this solar system have been gas giants like Jupiter. But this one is small.

"Its radius should be only 1.5 times the Earth's radius, and models predict that the planet should be either rocky, like our Earth, or covered with oceans," Udry said in a telephone interview.

It appears to have a mass five times that of Earth's. Gliese 581 is among the 100 closest stars to Earth, just 20.5 light-years away in the constellation Libra.

Hacker Cracks a Mac at Security Conference

A hacker managed to break into a Mac and win a US$10,000 prize as part of a contest started at the CanSecWest security conference in Vancouver.

The conference organizer decided to offer the contest in part to draw attention to possible security shortcomings in Macs. "You see a lot of people running OS X saying it's so secure and frankly Microsoft is putting more work into security than Apple has," said Dragos Ruiu, the organizer of security conferences including CanSecWest

The contest originally was open just to conference attendees, who were invited to try to break into the machines through a wireless access point. But on Thursday evening, 3Com Corp.'s TippingPoint division put up the cash prize and put the machines online so that anyone could participate.

The winner has not yet been named but is not someone attending the conference in Vancouver.
