MySpace News goes live

MySpace News has now gone live.Built on technology developed by Newroo (which News Corp. acquired last year), MySpace news combines the aggregation functionality of Google News, with user voting similar to Digg.

myspace_news.jpgFrom London's Times newspaper (owned by News Corp.):

MySpace is going into the news business with a service that will scour the internet for news stories and let users vote on which ones receive the most exposure.

This approach blends elements of Google News and sites such as Digg and Netscape, which rely on readers to submit stories and determine their prominence.

They have said MySpace News won't favor News Corp-owned content, and, according to the site's FAQs page .

Also from the Times:

It also marks the site’s ambitions to become a web portal like Yahoo!, providing its users with a front door to the internet.

Soon MySpace will be one among the complete portals like Google, Yahoo providing everything under one roof…this is real competition starting up !!… Anyway the users are at a high gain , more the competition , more the benefit to the user !! …Yep !

Yahoo, PayPal Team up to battle Google Checkouts

Yahoo has announced partnership with Ebay, PayPal to offer an express checkout system similar to Google Checkouts. Search on Yahoo and you will notice small blue icons beside search results. With the Yahoo! PayPal Checkout Program, a blue shopping cart icon appears next to your ad in Yahoo! search results. This can help your ad stand out, and let customers know you offer PayPal Express Checkout. This is very similar to the Google Checkout program.

Here’s a note from Yahoo’s Search Marketing Blog:

“Here is how it works: When a user goes to Yahoo Search to find an item or service, the results page may include Yahoo Sponsored Search results matched to the user’s query. If the merchant has joined the Yahoo PayPal Checkout program, a blue shopping cart icon will appear next to the merchant’s name in the Sponsored Search results. By clicking on the ad, users will have direct access to a safe, secure purchasing process that does not require any additional credit card information and can be completed in just a few mouse clicks.”

This will create a lot of competition for Google as Paypal has been popular in this area and highly reliable and secure site for transactions, so probability of people using Yahoo-Paypal is more compared to Google Checkout..Only thing is people are already much more familiar to Paypal.

Anyway..always the best survives..

How to Remove Ads from Yahoo Messenger

I had done this loong time ago , but recently i started using yahoo messenger a lot and these adsyahoo-messenger-ads.jpg are really annoying . I got hold of a bat file which i had previously .The ads on yahoo messenger can be removed by running this .bat file.

Steps :

- Logout Yahoo Messenger and exit it.

- Run .bat file

- Login Now and you are done ..

No more ads ! It works with the latest messenger too..

Condition:

You won't be able to enter the chat rooms, so if you use this feature, don't run the patch.

What happens when you run this .bat file ?

The .bat file you've just downloaded edits most registry values related to the ads in Yahoo Messenger from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Yahoo\pager\YUrl, replacing the data with a dummy asterisk. Here's the list of string values:

Messenger Adyahoo-messenger-no-ads.gif
Webcam Upload Ad
Webcam Viewer Ad
Webcam Viewer Ad Big
Webcam Viewer Ad Medium
Change Room Banner
Conf Adurl
Chat Adurl

If you install new versions of Yahoo Messenger, you will have to repeat the steps above, as Yahoo setup rewrites the registry entries.

Maybe Yahoo will make it still tougher to remove ads like this ..

Yahoo Mail to introduce limitless account size

California-based Yahoo Inc., which already provides the has a huge userbase, is ready to shiftyahoomail.gif from its existing ‘1GB per account’ to "Unlimited Storage" in response to its competitors Google which provides at present 2.8gb and counting , Microsoft which provides 1gb for all and 2 gb windows live account for us people.Users can now share greater amounts of imagery, music, and video media through e-mail from now on.

The lifting of Yahoo’s account sizing is expected to start in May of this year, and the changeover should take around a month, says the company.

“We have been closely monitoring average usage. We are comfortable that our users are far under 1 gig(abyte), on average,” said John Kremer, VP of Yahoo Mail, before outlining that, “What we see are an increasing number of rich media files as consumers send more photos.”

“We are giving them [Yahoo e-mail account holders] no reason to ever have to delete old e-mails,” commented Yahoo co-founder David Filo via a phone interview with Reuters. “You can keep stuff forever.”

What do they mean by "You can keep stuff forever" ..nothing is permanent..

It would be useful to know whether they will also allow POP3 access to clients (e.g. Outlook) which is currently only available to subscribers of Yahoo Mail Plus (~US$20/year) This feature is free for Gmail.

Google’s Mobile Phone Coming Soon!

If companies like Apple Inc. or even Italian fashion designer Prada SpA can design a mobilegoogle_mobile_phone.jpg phone, why not Google Inc.?

A recent job opening posted on the Google Web site appears to confirm the company may now be tinkering with more than just an idea but with some real hardware in its engineering labs.

Today the head of Google in Spain and Portugal has confirmed that Google is working on a mobile phone. "Some of the time the engineers are dedicated to developing a mobile phone," Isabel Aguilera is quoted as saying on the Spanish news Web site Noticias.com.

Plus, Google has on its payroll. Andy Rubin, the founder of handheld device maker Danger who later started Android, a mobile-software maker that Google bought in 2005. Google also acquired mobile-applications company Reqwireless and Google secretly acquired a company called Skia, whose first product is a portable graphics engine that renders 2D graphics on handhelds.

"Some of the time the engineers are dedicated to developing a mobile phone," This could be the 20% free time development but publicizing that would be stupid. Obviously this phone could link in with Google Earth/Maps… it is a marketers dream for targeted advertising."

Yahoo India Hit With More Copyright Complaints from Indian Bloggers

Yahoo Inc.'s problems with Indian bloggers over unauthorized reproduction of their content on itsyahoo_india.gif Indian portals may be just beginning.

Bloggers claim they have identified more instances of their content being reproduced without permission on Yahoo's Indian portals. Yahoo's Indian subsidiary has yet to come up with an appropriate response that satisfies the bloggers.

Yahoo did not refer to Su or her blog by name, and also blamed the mistake on its contentcopyrights.jpg provider Webdunia.com (India) Pvt. Ltd . ( oh! what a nice way to put the blame )

Her blog link is here - Surgayathri

Surgayathri has demanded a written apology from Yahoo for allegedly stealing her blog content.(even though her blog was protected under Creative Common Licensing  ). The blogger describes herself as a housewife from Kerala in south India in her blog.

She said that her next step would be to take the dispute to court on a number of charges including copyright violation, if "Yahoo keeps on washing their hands off and tries to do a mockery of an apology."

Other than Kariveppila blog, Yahoo! India stole contents from another web magazine (Puzha.com) too and from some other Malayalam bloggers.

This image shows that the whole thing was not a simple copy paste. There were many things which were altered , like sequence of the para's,pictures and sentence structures.( thanks CopyrightsViolation blog).
